Helloooooo America! And hellooooo sunshine!
Since my arrival back into the U.S. 5 days ago, I have been greeted with a lot of rain! So I was a bit excited to see the morning sun today. Yay! The excitement grew even bigger when I get to re-bond with my kitties, Clara (with the black nose) and Cecilia (with the pink nose). Such scaredy cats. But ultra adorable!
I’ve been seeing kiwano in grocery stores and I’ve always wanted to try it. And I did! It looks a bit like a fruit that comes from outer space or that you’ll see in sci-fi movies, doesn’t it? But this peculiar looking fruit is native to Africa and is now grown in Australia, New Zealand, and the U.S.
I really have no idea what it would taste like, or even how I was supposed to eat it. I cut it in half and I think its “coolness” just leveled up! Yellow and prickly on the outside, green on the inside, with a cucumber-like slimy texture. It reminds me of Madame Vastra from Doctor Who, for some reason.
I scooped a tiny piece. It tasted quite tangy but fresh, kind of like a tangy cucumber. Honestly, I expected kiwano to have somewhat of a sweet taste, like honeydew. But when I blended it together with my banana ice cream, it surprised me how well they paired together.
KIWANO-NANA ICE CREAM
2 frozen bananas
2 tbs almond milk
1 tsp maca powder
1. Put everything in a blender. Blend on high until you get a smooth creamy consistency.
2. Add desired toppings (e.g. nuts, fruits, seeds).
